CAC Book Donation Program
In December 2006, the Children’s Advocacy Center launched its book donation program with more than 100 books from the First Book National Book Bank. The First Book organization cooperates with agencies and other literacy programs in order to provide books for children who may not otherwise have access to books. Since it’s inception in 1992, First Book has given more than 40 million books to children across the nation.
The Children’s Advocacy Center began its book donation program with the hope that each child who comes to the CAC will leave with their own book. The reason for a child’s visit to the CAC is undoubtedly stressful and emotional. Receiving a book during their visit contributes to a child’s feelings of well-being and safety and in turn assists him/her on their path to recovery.
Through a partnership with Candlewick Press, Aspen Systems, JetBlue Airways and Nickelodeon Jr., First Book has been able to receive a donation of books, store them in a warehouse, and ship them to the CAC for the cost of only $.25 cents a book.
Our waiting room includes a special area to display books so that children may browse the selection while waiting for their interview or exam. The Family Justice Center onsite childcare provider often reads with children and encourages them to enjoy the selection of books. Titles of the books include Crazy Hair Day, The Egyptology Handbook, a pop-up book of prehistoric sharks and sea animals and more. The CAC continues to utilize First Book and other donations to assist in our mission to reduce trauma to the children we serve.
