Halloween Safety Tips

Spooky season is officially here! As Halloween approaches, it’s the perfect time to remind youth and caregivers about staying safe while having fun. A quick safety plan before heading out can make all the difference for a fun and safe Halloween night!

  • Costumes do NOT equal consent - no matter how someone is dressed, their clothing (or who/what they are dressed as) does NOT give others permission to harass or touch them in any way. Make it clear to your group if someone is bothering you.
  • Use the buddy system! Whether trick or treating or going to a party, make a plan to stick with your group. Check in with your friends often, and never go anywhere alone.
  • Watch for red flags! Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for people who are crossing the boundaries of you or those in your group.
  • Honor Boundaries - trust your gut instinct. If a situation doesn't feel right, or someone is making you uncomfortable, leave and contact a trusted adult for support.
  • Stay Connected - caregivers and youth should plan to keep phones charged and check in often. If youth will spend Halloween at a friend's house, keep those lines of communication open!
  • Internet Safety Reminder - make sure you are not sharing your location on social media, or posting costume photos publicly in real time.
